How to Buy a Used CBCT Machine
CBCT systems are expensive new — $80,000 to $300,000 — and the used market is legitimate. But there are real traps. This guide covers what to check before you bid.
Why the used CBCT market is worth taking seriously
A new CBCT system from a major manufacturer costs between $80,000 and $300,000 fully installed. The same system, 5 to 8 years old, in very good condition with documented service history and transferable software, can be purchased for $15,000 to $55,000.
CBCT technology has been mature since roughly 2010. The physics of cone beam imaging have not changed. A 2016 i-CAT FLX produces diagnostically equivalent images to a 2024 system for the vast majority of implant and endodontic applications. The new system has better software, a nicer interface, and a service contract. The used system has the same diagnostic capability at a fraction of the price.
The key is knowing what to check before you buy. Software licensing, installation requirements, and service availability are where buyers get surprised. This guide covers all three.
Software licensing: the most important thing to verify
Before bidding on any CBCT: Contact the manufacturer directly with the unit's serial number and ask whether the software license can be transferred to a new owner, and what that process costs. This is not a small question. Some manufacturers charge $5,000 to $15,000 for license transfer. Some require a new license entirely. A few systems have licenses that transfer at no cost.
CBCT software is what makes the system usable. Without a valid, transferable license, you have an expensive X-ray machine that cannot produce the 3D reconstructions you need for clinical use.
The listing condition report and seller documentation will tell you the software version installed. Your job is to verify, before you bid, what it costs to put that software in your name legally.
Common CBCT models and what to know about each
i-CAT Next Generation / FLX
$15,000 – $42,000One of the most widely sold CBCT platforms in North America. Strong service network, multiple software generations still in active use. i-CAT software (Xoran) has a clear upgrade path. Holds value well.
Planmeca ProMax 3D / ProMax 3D Max
$18,000 – $55,000Premium European system with a strong reputation for image quality. Romexis software is sold per-seat but generally transferable with documentation. Parts and service are widely available.
Carestream CS 9000 3D / CS 9300
$8,000 – $22,000The CS 9300 is a popular mid-tier system with a good resale market. Compact footprint makes it practical for smaller operatories. CS 9000 3D is the entry-level 3D model.
Dentsply Sirona Orthophos SL 3D / XG 3D
$12,000 – $35,000Widely installed in the US. Sidexis software has several generations — confirm current version compatibility with your existing Dentsply Sirona workflow.
Vatech PaX-i3D
$9,000 – $20,000Korean-manufactured system with a growing US install base. Compact design, competitive pricing. EzDent software is generally straightforward to transfer.
NewTom / Villa Sistemi Medicali
$8,000 – $25,000Italian-manufactured. Less common in the US market. Some practices have these from early adopter purchases. Parts and service availability in the US can be limited.
Pre-purchase checklist
Go through this before placing a bid. These are the items that cause expensive surprises after the fact.
Total cost of ownership: beyond the purchase price
The purchase price is only part of the cost. Before committing, estimate your total cost including:
A complete used CBCT installation budget should typically include $5,000 to $25,000 above the purchase price for all ancillary costs. Even with these additions, the total is often 60–80% below new-equipment pricing.
Common questions
How much does a used CBCT machine cost?
Used CBCT machines typically range from $8,000 to $55,000 depending on brand, model, FOV size, age, software status, and condition. Entry-level single-unit systems (like the Carestream CS 9000 3D) sell at the low end. High-end large-FOV systems (Planmeca ProMax 3D, i-CAT FLX) sell at the high end when in good condition with current software. Systems with expired software licenses or missing components sell at steep discounts.
What is the biggest risk when buying a used CBCT?
Software licensing. CBCT software licenses are often tied to the original machine serial number and the original licensee. When you buy a used CBCT, you may not be able to transfer the software license, which means you would need to purchase a new license — which can cost $5,000 to $15,000 or more, depending on the manufacturer. Always verify software license transferability before bidding.
Does a CBCT machine require radiation shielding?
Yes. CBCT systems emit ionizing radiation and require a radiation-shielded room that has been evaluated and cleared by a qualified medical physicist. Requirements vary by jurisdiction and by the specific system (FOV size and kVp affect exposure levels). Confirm your state dental board requirements before purchasing. Installing a CBCT in an unshielded room is not legal.
Can I install a CBCT machine myself?
No. CBCT installation requires a factory-trained or certified technician, and most manufacturers require certified installation to maintain any warranty or service contract. You will also need a radiation safety physicist to survey the room before and after installation. Budget for professional installation in your total cost — typically $1,500 to $4,000 depending on the system.
Which used CBCT models hold value best?
The i-CAT series (originally Imaging Sciences, now Envista) and Planmeca ProMax 3D systems hold value well due to their long service track records and broad software support. Carestream CS 9300 is a solid mid-tier performer. Older first-generation flat-panel CBCT systems (pre-2012) have depreciated sharply and often have software compatibility issues that reduce their practical value significantly.
Why buy a used CBCT from Operatory Auctions vs. eBay or a dealer
The risks that make buying a used CBCT difficult — software licensing uncertainty, undisclosed condition issues, no recourse after purchase — are exactly what our listing process addresses.
